Filter foam is good-quality foam with a medium/firm feel. Filter foam has a high dust collection rate, while still providing high air flow. It operates as a depth-loading filter, as opposed to a surface-loading filter, essentially trapping dust particles with its cells. It is the ideal material for applications where porosity, surface area and low-density are integral for success.

Light but highly abrasion-resistant polyurethanes are perfect for hardwearing shoe soles, with excellent long-term mechanical properties. Polyurethane soles are practical and keep water out, while in no way limiting design potential.

Within the shoe sector, polyurethanes are found in a wide range of footwear types. Although best known for sports and trekking shoes and boots, they are also extensively used for business and fashion shoe soles, as well as high-quality safety shoes. Low-density to compact polyurethane systems are utilised for mid-soles and outer soles.

Automotive applications

Polyurethane foams can be found in seats, armrests and headrests of most cars, where their cushioning properties help to reduce the fatigue and stress often associated with driving.

Their durability and light weight, combined with their strength, make them ideal not only for cushioning purposes, but also within the bodies of cars, where their insulation properties provide protection against the heat and noise of the engine.

The durability, corrosion resistance and weather resistance of polyurethanes makes them suitable for coating all kinds of surfaces. Applications range from concrete constructions like bridges and motorway structures, to steel railway carriages and wooden furniture.

Adhesives / binders

Polyurethanes are so versatile that they are also available in the form of glues that can safely bind together quite different materials, such as wood, rubber, cardboard or glass.

Construction projects, in particular, take advantage of polyurethane glues. Packaging manufacturers and producers of exterior furniture, both of whom require resilience and strength in their products, also frequently rely on polyurethane adhesives.

Polyurethanes are useful in the production of new applications developed from discarded and recycled materials. For instance, end-of-use vehicle tyres can be made into children’s playgrounds, sports tracks or surfaces for sports stadiums thanks to polyurethane’s adhesive qualities.

Sealants

Sealants prevent liquids and heat from entering or escaping through gaps and crevices. Polyurethanes are tough and can be used in harsh climatic conditions to protect windows. Sealants help to reduce heat loss, decreasing energy bills and carbon footprints. Other sealant applications include concrete expansion joints in the construction sector and pre-formed gasket seals in the automotive sector. Sealants are also used in electrical and electronic equipment to stop moisture entering components such as joints and switchgear devices.

Other applications: Elastomers

Polyurethane elastomers are used in a very wide range of applications, essentially in the engineering field, where properties of durability, abrasion resistance and chemical and oil resistance are needed. Applications include rollers and belts to carry minerals in quarrying operations, wheels for Rollerblades and hospital trolleys, rollers for printing processes and hoses, and other components in under-the-bonnet automotive applications.
